Elemental stoichiometry of freshwater fishes in relation to phylogeny, allometry and ecology

چکیده
Twenty species of freshwater fishes were collected fromMinnesota, Iowa andMichigan and their whole-body carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus contents and the respective C:N:P ratios were determined. Patterns were examined in intraand interspecific variation, allometry and variation caused by habitat and trophic level in whole fish while controlling for the role of phylogeny. Stoichiometric variation was greater across than within species, C:N:P allometry was speciesspecific, nutrient content within a species was somewhat habitat-specific and P concentration showed a strong phylogenetic signal. Stoichiometric relationships with allometry and feeding guild were observed but were not significant in an analysis accounting for non-independence of closely related species. Supportive evidence for the hypothesis that the considerable variation in whole fish phosphorus concentrations could be ascribed to differences in bone and scale development, as previously suggested, is shown. Whole fish Ca:P ratios had a nearly constant stoichiometry consistent with the chemical signature of bone. This result combined with a phylogenetic signal for fish P indicated that the great stoichiometric variability among fish taxa in P content was derived almost entirely from skeletal investment. # 2007 The Authors

متن کاملEcological stoichiometry in freshwater benthic systems: recent progress and perspectives
1. Ecological stoichiometry deals with the mass balance of multiple key elements [e.g. carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P)] in ecological systems. This conceptual framework, largely developed in the pelagic zone of lakes, has been successfully applied to topics ranging from population dynamics to biogeochemical cycling. More recently, an explicit stoichiometric approach has also been used ...
متن کاملEcological stoichiometry in freshwater benthic ecosystems: an introduction
1. Ecological stoichiometry is a conceptual framework that considers how the balance of energy and elements affects and is affected by organisms in the environment. This perspective has seen recent development primarily in marine and freshwater pelagic ecosystems but its widescale application to freshwater benthic ecosystems remains limited. 2. This paper briefly introduces the concept of ecolo...
متن کاملEcological Stoichiometry as an Integrative Framework in Stream Fish Ecology
—Ecological stoichiometry refers to the relative availability of elements in ecosystems as both an influence upon and result of ecological interactions. Nutrient ratios have long been analyzed in primary producers, but their application to animals is more recent. Here, we summarize the ecological stoichiometry framework and highlight three key contexts in stream fish ecology: body stoichiometry...

By using an elemental-stoichiometry approach to zooplankton-phytoplankton interactions, we compare elemental composition and aspects of nutrient deficiency across a variety of marine and freshwater ecosystems. During 1992 and 1993 we sampled a total of 31 lakes (in northern Wisconsin and Michigan and the Experimental Lakes Area of northern Ontario) and 21 marine stations (at seven estuarine, co...
